Anyone planning a longer trip will quickly face a crucial question: Does my statutory health insurance provide enough coverage abroad—and if not, which international health insurance is right for me? The answer depends on three things: when you are leaving, how old you are, and what the purpose of your trip is.
Statutory health insurance offers no or only very limited coverage outside the EU. Even within Europe, many costs—such as for medication, medical repatriation, or treatments in private clinics—are not covered. For long-term stays abroad lasting several months or even years, having your own international health insurance isn’t an option but a necessity.
Living in Germany or Austria and haven’t left yet? The Protrip German Traveler provides worldwide coverage for up to five years—ideal for work & travel, round-the-world trips, extended work assignments abroad, or gap years. It can be taken out with or without a deductible and starts at €31.00 per month. Important: you must take out the insurance before departure and have a valid residence in Germany or Austria.
Already traveling and still uninsured? That’s exactly what the Protrip World Traveler is for. As one of the few international health insurance plans worldwide, it can be purchased online even after departure—from anywhere in the world, within minutes. Coverage starts immediately after the policy is completed for new medical cases.
Still in Germany and under 30 with an educational background? Then the Protrip World Education is the most affordable choice. Designed specifically for study abroad programs, au pair stays, internships, and language courses, it must be purchased before departure. With plans starting at €29.40 per month, it’s perfectly suited for student budgets.
A torn ligament while hiking in New Zealand, appendicitis in Southeast Asia, a motorcycle accident in Latin America – medical emergencies can happen no matter how well you plan. What makes the difference is how you can handle them. In many countries outside Europe, hospital treatment is provided only with payment in advance. A simple ER visit in the US can easily cost several thousand euros without insurance, and a hospital stay many times that amount. A medical repatriation to Germany – often vital in an emergency – can cost between €30,000 and €100,000 without coverage.
An international health insurance for long-term travel such as Protrip World covers outpatient and inpatient treatment, doctor visits, medication, surgeries, and – when medically necessary – return transport to your home country, with no limit on coverage amounts. Many leisure sports such as surfing, climbing, skiing, or diving are also automatically included.
What sets Protrip World apart from many standard offers is its flexibility. While traditional travel health insurance policies only cover short trips up to six weeks and must be purchased before departure, Protrip plans cover stays from several months up to five years – and depending on the plan, can even be taken out after your journey has begun. All plans can be purchased online in just a few minutes; the insurance certificate is issued immediately and is recognized by embassies and for visa applications.
Statutory health insurance often isn’t enough abroad
Good to know: German statutory health insurance offers only limited coverage abroad – especially for longer trips.
That’s why an international health insurance like Protrip World isn’t just helpful, but essential for many travelers. Start your adventure with peace of mind – no matter where the journey takes you.
Can I purchase the insurance while already abroad?
Yes, you can also take out Protrip World Traveler insurance if your trip has already begun. This rate starts at €117/month and has a deductible of €50 per insured event.
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Protrip German Traveler und Protrip World Traveler?
Protrip German Traveler: Can only be taken out BEFORE departure from Germany/Austria. A valid primary residence in one of the two countries is required.
Protrip World Traveler: Can be taken out worldwide at any time, even after the start of the trip.
When does the Protrip World Education plan make sense?
Protrip World Education is for people under 30 with an educational background (studies, au pair, internship, language course, volunteer work). The entire trip does NOT have to be educational—even if only part of it is educational, you can still take advantage of this low rate. The only important thing is that this rate must be purchased before you leave.
Do I need Protect Standard or Complete?
Protect Standard: Basic package with liability, accident, baggage, and assistance coverage.
Protect Complete: Same as Standard, but with higher coverage amounts (€5 million liability) and internship damage coverage. Recommended for au pairs due to higher liability coverage.
Are pre‑existing conditions covered?
The insurance covers acute, unforeseen illnesses. Chronic pre-existing conditions are covered only in case of an acute deterioration. Details can be found in the policy terms.
What does the €50 deductible mean?
With international health insurance, you pay the first €50 per insured event yourself. The insurance covers all costs above this amount.
Can I also insure accompanying family members?
Yes, you can also insure family members (spouse, children, teenagers) traveling with you in all products (Protrip German Traveler, Protrip World Traveler, Protrip World Education).
How to take out insurance:
Each person needs their own insurance policy. Family members cannot be added to the main person's online policy – either during the application process or at a later date. You must complete the entire online application process separately for each family member.
Example: For one adult and one child, you must complete the online application process twice – once for the adult and once for the child.
Important:
All family members must choose the same tariff option as the main person. Children under the age of 6 can only be insured if at least one parent or legal guardian is also insured under the desired tariff.
